This narrow street is lined with a selection of bars, clubs, fast food joints and tattoo parlours. Much of Magaluf's problems are confined to a small area around the notorious Punta Ballena strip. Bars such as Iroko in Palmanova regularly welcome reality TV stars while Barbuda beach is a haunt for Love Island celebrities. Mega-yachts are moored at neighbouring Puerto Portals and Port Adriano, while big-name Premier League bosses like Jurgen Klopp, Mikel Arteta and others have holiday homes in the area. Large parts are polished and modern with shopping centres, new hotels and trendy cocktails bars dominating and located close to sprawling multi-million pound villas. There's no doubt that Magaluf has a toxic underbelly - but it's no worse many other so-called party resorts and a lot less problematic that some, including Blackpool. This summer, Italians, French and mainland Spanish youths have all been involved in unsavoury incidents where it has been convenient - and lazy - to portray Brits being at fault. But these were - and still are - rare incidents when it is considered how many hundreds of thousands of partygoers make their way to the town each summer.īut it's not just UK revellers who cause the resort's bad reputation. But for the residents of this small slice of Majorca, including hundreds of ex-pats, the rowdy boozing and raucous behaviour is rarely experienced.Īs a former Magaluf resident myself, it saddens me to see and hear the tragic stories linked to the heartbreak of a holidaymaker's death or the sadness of any attack on a tourist. It's only in the past few years that allegations pinpointing the excesses of British tourists have gained worldwide notoriety. These range from reports harmless escapades, normally involving too much alcohol, to more serious incidents like the tragic death of a British man outside a nightclub.īut why has this former fishing village become synonymous with 24-hour partying and excessive boozing? Magaluf has always welcomed tourists wishing to spend their hard-earned holiday cash on two weeks in the Spanish sun and this relaxed attitude to anything-goes antics has always been prevalent. Raucous party resort Magaluf has received its usual amount of adverse publicity this summer with lurid headlines spotlighting the bad behaviour and various tragedies involving UK tourists.
